    C2 - 1964 Conv. Value Inquiry

    Hello all,
I'm new here and was directed to your forum by a friend on a Mustang board with a question that I couldn't get answered there. Hope that you can give me some insight on a potentially sweet car:

Friend of mine has come in possession (inheritted) of an all original 1964 Corvette Convertible. Original owner (Father) was meticulous and wealthy, and the car is in beautiful shape. Body is straight, paint is good (red) and original, interior is fine. I don't have specs on engine but it starts up easy and is loud, which means to me that it's a V-8. I don't know what possible options were on it, but she doesn't think it has power anything. Doesn't sound like there is anything special or "unique" about the car, other than the shape and single owner. Car is stick and has about 40,000 miles on it.

Like I said, car is all original (except for possibly top, but description sounds like it's original to me), never been restored or rebuilt. Only wear and tear it may have would be from sitting for a while, but it has been started regularly.

She's looking for a price estimate, which I've found to be in the low $30,000's, (she's been offerred $32k by the mechanic who just did some cleanup on it) but I don't know how much the lack of molestation could add to that? I'm not crazy about her selling it, but she doesn't want it and I'm not in the position to make a play for it.

Appreciate any input you guys can offer. I thought about directing her to a local Vette club, but doubt she would take the initiative to do that. I don't want her to get taken advantage of. Thoughts?

I don't yet have a picture, but trying to get one, if for nothing else just to see the pretty thing.

    Thanks much!

The car could be worth almost anything. You really haven't provided enough information. Maybe if you give the location, someone could recommend a knowledgeable person to help.

Thanks for the response Scott. The Car is right around the NJ/NY state borders, not 100% sure which side it's on, but think Jersey.

What other information would be helpful for assessment? The owner doesn't know too much about it, other than it's loud and difficult for her to drive. I'm hoping to get out to see it in a day or so and re-assess my desire to talk her into giving it to me. Can also get some more real info.

Guy that did some work to clean it up offered $32k on the spot, so I figure it's worth a little more than that at a minimum. She put him off for a week or 2 to better figure out the value.

      Thanks,
      Rando

Look in the Contacts section of this site and contact the closest local chapter. I'm sure they can refer you to someone in your area to help assess the value. After the options, condition and originality are important, but very difficult to rate for a Corvette novice.

I would strongly recommend that you have a knowledgeable NCRS person evaluate the car before you set a selling price. Take the advice of a previous poster and use the "Contacts" section at http://www.ncrs.org to locate the chair of the chapter closest to the car. They should be able to direct you to one or more qualified people can will evaluate the car, typically for $100 to $300.

I have seen firsthand how an unsophisticated seller can let a car go at a below market price. The car that I own today was sold when the owner died. His son thought he got a really good price when he sold it to a Corvette broker for $25K. I paid a LOT more than that for the car and thought I got a good deal. When I contacted the son as part of researching the history of the car, he asked me what I paid for it. The answer upset him considerably....

By the way, factors that will affect the value of this car include not only the condition the car is in, but also the specific engine it has and how close to original the components are. An experienced NCRS person will know what to look for.

If the car is as you describe and has no rust issues in the birdcage or frame, it could be worth as much as 50K with desirable options. A truly original car with 40K would be an excellant canidate for the "BowTie" award.

Do not be in a hurry to sell the car. Get some help from knowledgable NCRS judges and seek a professional apprasial from a company specializing in vintage Corvettes.

Do not let some shyster tell you the 64 isn't worth anything. It is still a member of one the most sought after bodystyles on the planet.

            Good Luck,
            tc
