I'm putting in the new carpet in the '79 and ran into a problem. The carpet on the console sides attaches to a Masonite-type panel. If they glued it, it must have been like when they formed the board.
I tried to peel it off, both by pulling and by trying to use a putty knife to separate carpet from the Masonite. All it does is pull the Masonite apart.
I tried a heat gun to see if the glue would soften and separate, but instead the carpet melts. It still doesn't separate.
Has anyone done this before and what worked?
I'm about at the point of buying some Masonite and cutting new panels, but they won't really be the same.
