Re: those 640 and 1240 kHz symbols on the AM radio dials ('53 thru '64 ?). I read that the U.S. government requirement for these symbols ended sometime in 1963, but my '64 Corvette radio from VIN 86xx (jan '64) has them. Did they continue until supply exhausted ? I know that my early '65 (VIN 14xx) does not.

The "Tin Chevies " didn't get them till 56. A 55 will not have them.

Re: C1/C2E - Conelrad, or how I miss the Cold War
You gotta believe factory folks didn't 'throw away' perfectly good Covette radios in early '64 just because some 'straggler' inventory with the Konelrad alert symbols happened to be left over from the '63 MY build OR happened to be discovered mis-binned in inventory OR was rejected for failure during '63, got sent back to Delco for repair and magically 'reappeared' during the '64 model year build...
Unfortunately, I know I don't know the change-over point for radios with the emergency warning indicators on the AM dial. A quick flip through my copy of the 63-64 and 65 JG didn't provide any help...- Top

Re: C1/C2E - Conelrad, or how I miss the Cold War
Wayne,
I'm not 100% sure but I believe the conelrad symbol continued all the way through the 64 model year. I do know for sure that the new 64 I purchased in Feb of 64 had the symbols and it was built a day or two after your car. (#8763)
The Delco radio parts catalog shows no change in the part number for the dial/lens for the entire 64 model year but the number did change for the 65 model so I assume the symbol continued right through to the end of 64 production.- Top

If you have radios to compare 63 vs. 64. The identification numbers on a 63 would be 86 FMA XXXX. The 64 identification numbers would be 21 FJA XXXX (FJB, FJC etc.) as they only sequenced to 9999. I'm sure some of the 63 FMA's made it into 64 production. Anyway, look at the 64 FJA,B,C radios and see if they have the symbol.

Re: C1/C2E - Conelrad, or how I miss the Cold War
Harry,
I don't have any 63-64 radios here to compare but it sounds like the 64 model was supposed to get a different unit. I wonder if the existing 63 unit was used for early 64 until stock was depleted, as Jack suggested? I don't have my Delco radio catalog here either but I seem to remember looking at all of the component numbers for 63 and 64 and I don't remember a change in the dial part number.- Top

Re: C1/C2E - Conelrad, or how I miss the Cold War
Michael, Best I can recall the PN's are 63 - 985686, 64 - 985921, 65 to 67 - 986281. Based on PN's, then yes 64 had a different unit. I'm not sure if the 64 unit had the same face plate as a 63 or not. If members know for sure about their radios, hopefully they will add to the thread.

Re: C1/C2E - Conelrad, or how I miss the Cold War
Will be interesting to see if the symbol did disappear on later 64 cars. I would assume that the final design for the 64 model year radio was completed about the same time in mid 63 that the gov eliminated the required symbol so at least at that point, the symbol was probably included in the 64 build.
Someone should start a new thread on this and request info from 64 owners. (not me, I never get any results from my surveys)- Top
