C1 Corvettes on the rise $$$

Friend of mine just paid $60,000 for a fairly mint '60. Told me my '58 FI was probably worth more. Alot of talk going on....figured the NCRS group would know the skinny. What's up?

Hi Terry,C-1 Corvettes are "The Original" and while most all Corvettes have been an improvement over preciding years they will remain the original.Plus as the number of Corvettes continue to rise their minority will be greater.I think what you are seeing is a natural increase of a collectable, with a heritage that bolsters its roots. And as nice as 435's,L88's,ZR1 and now the new Z06's are,C1s will be the Grandaddy.

While the asking prices seem to continually rise, two indicators I've noticed implies the opposite.

      1. Pro Team prices have remained stable the last 6 months and some have fallen.

      2. Selling prices are dropping on eBay.

Not that definitive, but when prices went up last January after Barrett Jackson, both of these were running up front on the increases.

That doesn't mean you will be buying C1s for $5000 in a month, though. It just means if you have paid top dollar for a car, it may be awhile before you get a chance to sell at the same or higher.

        Terry

I saw a nice 58 fuelie sell for $55,000 3 years ago. I suspect a nice one should bring that and more now...considering you can't have a top shop fully restore one for that much.

If you think in terms of 10% annual cumulative increases..you will have a pretty fair idea of the value of your premium car over time. That is not valid for average cars made in big volume or the really premium special cars.

I remember when mid years were hitting the $6500 mark..but time has passed...and now we are at todays prices.

From what I have seen in the last six months, $60,000.00 sounds like a good price to me. I saw a frame off charcoal 58 fuelly at Carlisle in August with an $89,00.00 asking price. I also looked at a nice black 60 fuelly in Palm Springs this past summer that sold for $85,000.00. My review of the Pro Team listings indicates prices are in the 60's and up for nice 58 to 60 examples with a premium over that for a fuel car. I haven't seen anything decent in the fifties for over a year.

An absolutely pristine 61 big brake fuelie sold at Hershey several weeks back for over $140,000. It was a Top Flight and Duntov award winner and was PV'd.

Any body remember the price on ford model Ts ten, fifteen years ago? Can buy them at 1/3 the price today. Cars get older we get older if the young guys today dont want them what happens. The cost to restore a car today is what helps keep the prices up. Buy a junker for 15 K- 30 K cost you 50 K +++,to restore it, buy one done for 60 K. Ive seen top flight cars and then seen top flight cars, big differance between a 94 and a 99 about 30K-50K. Paint job is over 10K today. Phil 8063
