    71 LS5 clutch replacement

Sping is here and it is time to replace the clutch and see why my car has a hard time going into second gear. I do not know how old my clutch is or what is in it. Joe has told me that i have a 1983 doug nash super T-10 and that it should be a 11 inch clutch with a 26 spline shaft. What should i tell the parts man when i order the clutch, plate and throwout bearing? JOE, is the correct throwout bearing the 1 1/4 GM #908244 that you listed in an old post correct for my application or do i need the long 1 7/8 #908092. I have a good friend that owns a trans shop and will do the work for free if i get the parts, his only concern is that i dont tie up his hoist with the car apart tring to get the parts, hence i need to buy before he starts the work. I here from the archives that the centerforce is a nice clutch to get, who sells them and is this a brand name or type of clutch setup?

For all practical purposes, the clutch doesn't care if you have a '71 Muncie or and '83 T-10, as they all represent the same shaft to the clutch. The proper throwout bearing is determined by the clutch and Bellhousing combo, again not the trans, so what you're looking for is a complete clutch and pressure plate assembly for a '71 LS-5. Start with Chevrolet dealer if cost is not an object, and don't forget to have the flywheel face surfaced

Don't forget to check the engine and trans oil seals and replace if they are leaking, otherwise you'll get to do it all over again.

        Jeff----

Here's what you need if you go the GM route, which is what I always recommend:

Clutch pressure plate and cover assembly--GM #3884598--GM LIST $187.96

Clutch friction disc---------------------GM #10120997--GM LIST DISCONTINUED

        Release bearing---------------------------GM #908244---GM LIST $52.94

Unfortunately, unless your dealer can locate a friction disc for you in dealer stock, you are not going to be able to go the GM route. In that case, I'd probably recommend trying a Centerforce unit. You can purchase these through most of the big performance suppliers like Summit or Jegs. They have an outstanding reputation.

I have a shop in Southern California that can rebuild clutch disks, by replacing the friction material. Assuming your disk is otherwise in good mechanical condition and the car is not driven hard this is worth looking into. A shop that rebuilds riveted brake shoes can probably rebuild the clutch disk.
