    67 steering column

Does anyone know the difference between 67 and 68 steering column. I just began disassembling my column and found that under the primered (some joker primed the whole column) parts the top half of the column is painted lt. green metallic. Granted my car has green interior I know for sure all 67 columns were painted black. Other items to note is the fact that the bottom plastic bearing retainer/ spacer is very long 1.5 to 2 inches. Also the bottom of the shaft has no splines and appears to have been sawed off. Are the 68 columns the same in appearance to 67 but longer in length? It's tough finding people with knowlege spanning body changes. (63-7/68-72) thanks, Joe

    Re: 67 steering column

    Joe,

The only column I have completely restored and reassembled is for a 66 but I do have a 67 and a 68. I haven't disassembled either one of those columns but I have had both out of their cars, even together at one time (but not anymore). I don't know how helpful this will be but maybe it can at least give you (or someone else) a start.

The plastic bearing / retainer that you describe is similar to the one on the 68 column I have. Both shafts have the splines that you mention, neither one appears "sawed short" from my observation. As I had previously mentioned, I had both out at one time, but I didn't notice if either column was longer than the other. It would seem that I would have noticed something like that, so for the time being I believe they where the same overall length (with steering wheels attached).

I can only PRESUME at this point that either you have a column from later than 67, or at the least have some parts installed on yours that could / would interchange with a 67 column. I don't know how interchangeable some or any of the parts are between those years / styles. I know the 67 steering wheel is different, but believe it too would mount the same on either column. Hope this has helped. TBarr #24014

        Re: 67 steering column

        Hi Mr. Scafidi!

I recently had this same exact scenario - someone had "built" a column in my 1967 from 67 & 68 parts. Fortuinately I rescued a 1967 column & rebuilt it a few years back. Sounds like, if the main shaft splines have been sawn offf, that you are in a similar situation.

Email me @ crose@adclinic.com or call (512) 336-2994 tonight p-7 Austin time & I'll measure each part with you.

        Carl
