I am ready to install the exhaust manifolds on my 68 427. When I took it apart there were no lock washers on the bolts. In the past I have taken other exhaust manifolds on and off of other cars and my recollection is that none had any kind of lock washers. I guess this makes sense, the heat must eventually degrade the retaining ability of the lock washer. To further complicate this, I have seen SB french locks but can't find them for BB. What should I use, locks or no locks?

The Paragon part number for the big block french locks is 1027K. Most of the other vendors carry these, too.
However, I do not think that these french locks were originally used for later 1967-74 big block applications. For these applications I believe that GM changed to a special flanged head, locking-style bolt for the end runner bolts. No washers were used with these bolts. These are GM #3909821 and they remain available from GM.
The remaining bolts were non-locking bolts and the same as used for previous big block applications at all positions. No washers or spacers were used with these bolts. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
