    Points to TI Conversion

I have an original 1965 Transistor Ignition L76 that now has a correct, but not for my car, 65 L76 points distributor.

I would like to bring the car back to original and an curious if it is possible to easily convert the points type distributor to a TI type by removing the points plate/cam and installing the stationary and rotating pole pieces?

    Anyone try this?

    Brian,

The distributor that you have can easily be converted to a TI unit, IF you can find all of the correct parts. I see the stationary and rotating pole pieces for sale on ebay often. However, the large brass washer that fits under the stationary pole is more difficult to find. (unique to TI) Also, although the existing shaft/cam from the point L76 distributor will function, the TI system has a different advance curve. I'm sure that can be taylored to somewhat match the original specs of the correct TI distributor.

All that's left would be the amp and harnesses, and a few minor conversions back to TI on the original wiring harnesses. Good luck with your project,

    Michael

As Michael has described, the distributor can be converted if you acquire and install the correct parts. Basically, all that you'll be using from the distributor you have is the housing, rotor, cap, vacuum control, cross gear/adapter and drive gear. Everything else will be changed to achieve the correct original configuration and function.

If what you're after is an as-original, 100% correct installation, then restoring the TI system to the car is the way to go. Overall, it's going to be quite expensive, though. You'll end up spending in the range of $1,000 for all the parts you need, especially if you need to obtain a TI coil, too.

If functionality is important to you, I don't recommend an original TI system, at all. These systems can be quite problematic and I think that's one of the major reasons that the system was dropped after the 1971 model year. Even with the upgraded, contemporary module in the amplifier unit, there are still problems with this set-up that can leave you stranded.

My recommednation from a functionality perspective: convert the distributor that you have to an electronic pick-up using the Breakerless conversion kit. This will cost you about $200 and the system that you'll end up with will be much more reliable and just as well performing as TI. Plus, you can carry a set of points with you as a back-up. In the VERY unlikely event that the Breakerless unit ever fails you, with the set of points and 10 minutes you're on the road again. You can't do that with TI.

Hey Joe - I understand your position on TI, but can you reccomend a source and brand on updating the amplifier module.

        Thanks

The modules are avaiable from most of the Corvette parts vendors. I know that Dr. Rebuild carries them.

if you have the mag pluse distributor

you can also use a HEI module to fire the system and the are very reliable and much cheaper than the TI system. the brass washer that joe referred to is 1.500 OD,.660 ID and .080 thick
