    Help with howling noise

I have begun to notice a slight howling noise from the left rear of my 66 roadster. The noise becomes very pronounced when the car turns to the right. The sharper the corner, the louder the noise. I suspect the spindle may need attention. Any advice would be appreciated. The rear end is 3.08 positraction.

When was the last time the rear bearings were serviced?

Not sure. I bought the car about six months ago and did not get a lot of past history with it. The odometer reads 29000 and the brake pedal reads at least 12900 miles. As far as I know, the rear bearings need attention at around 100000 miles or so.

I bought a 65 and had the right side bearing fail two days after driving the car home from Kentucky to New York. I suspect yours need attention. When the 65 failed I ended up replacing the housing and spindle. The left side was OK to rebuild.

        Good Luck

i believe GM recommended spindle bearing lub at 25K mile intervals. sounds like you are about to experience spindle bearing renewal. get the shop manual and the proper tools to remove spindle from the trailing arm/housing assembly. do not take a hammer to the threaded end of the spindle. good luck, mike

Slightly jack the trailing arm on that side so the tire is off the ground. You have to do it that way to keep the tension off the half shaft. Then grab the wheel and try to wiggle it and rotate it. You might notice looseness or feel a grumble when you rotate it. As people have said, sounds like a trailing arm bearing. Unless you are very capable, I would pull the trailing arm and send it to Blair's for a rebuild. Do both sides at the same time. Good luck. Terry

100,000 miles was ok if you drove 15-20K per year, at this rate you are about 35 years overdue for a rebuild, as that is the only practical way to get grease to the outer bearing. The longer the wait, the more (expensive) parts required.

Bill , before servicing bearings, etc. I would replace lubricant and positive traction additive in rear end.
