Jim, glad to have the "Father" of the 59 registry among us. I joined in early 2004 when I purchased my 59, #7959, so that I could begin learning about my Vette. I believe that the money spent is one of the best investments I have ever made. The wealth of info on this board is astounding and extremely helpful. My membership number indicates that there are approximately 1,300 members that joined in the last 1-1/2 years. Not bad. By the way, great work on the registry.

Congratulations, and welcome!

The church I'm pastor of has about 30 Corvette owners--every year we have a 1 1/2 hour ride followed by brunch.

We contact those who don't have a spouse riding along and ask them if they will give the ride to, and buy brunch for, a 6th-10th grader. We then invite kids interested in cars to ride along. I bet that in the last 5 years we have influenced about 30 kids to become future Corvette owners.

Intentionality includes welcoming people like you!

That is a great idea. I saw a couple of kids walking by my 66 and eyeballing it, so I asked them if they wanted to sit in it and we all had a ball.

Years ago when I was in the McDonnell Sports Car Club, one yearly event was having a Road Rally with the School for the Blind. Every entrant was teamed with one of the kids from the school. The rally instructions were in Braille, so it wasn't a case of just giving the kid a pity ride, they were a very active and involved member of the team from the second each car started.

It was usually a highlight of the year.

Maybe something along these lines could be incorporated into NCRS weekends. While the heart of NCRS is restoring Corvettes and judging them, there are many members who attend events who are not judging or being judged, and something like this would not only give them something to do, but also promote Corvettes and NCRS.

The same sort of thing could be done with kids at the event. This gives the kids something to do, makes them feel special, makes them WANT to come to an event with Dad and Mom, and makes them think in terms of wanting a Corvette to have fun with, rather than Corvettes are just cars old men like.

Welcome to the NCRS!!!

I am a second generation NCRS member as my father Gene West joined in 1974 with a membership number in the 600's. I attended events with him as I grew up and purchased my first Corvette for $3900, an all original, basket case 1964 convertible when I 17 years old back in 1980. I didn't join the NCRS until 1988, member #18379. My son Jake is almost 3 years old and I can't keep him away from the car, he's right there by my side when I'm working on it, just like I was when dad was working on his Corvettes. My father and I took my Corvette on the 2005 NCRS Midwest Road Tour to Park City back in July where I received the NCRS Founders Award. We had a great time and we both really enjoyed the trip. Little did he or I know that would be his last NCRS event, he had cancer of the liver and didn't know it until around Labor Day. By then it was too late to treat it, he passed away on September 18th. He got me interested in Corvettes, he was a Corvette enthusiast as I am. We did/do most of our own restoration work and took great pride in our accomplishments. He taught me some great lessons not only in life but for the appreciation of Corvettes. I will miss him very much, but I have Jake to pass on everything he taught me about Corvettes and plan to do so. Hopefully he will join the NCRS when he gets older and carry on the Corvette/NCRS tradition.

To really appreciate the NCRS and all great people that make up its membership a person needs to get involved in the NCRS so get involved and enjoy it!

Welcome Jim,

I'll bet by the time your your first issues of the Corvette Restorer and the Driveline show up you will have forgotten about joining any other organization. In fact you'll start wondering what the heck took you so long to mail the membership check.

Yep, I'm looking forward to the new mail. Getting something other than bills is always exciting- Of course, I can't say that my wife will have the same reaction when she sees Corvette stuff showing up in droves 8^]
