62 rear axle codes

Are the rear axle codes located near the GM casting no.or on the other side. From what I understand it's located on the right side,however the carrie unit is quite rusted and pitted making location impossible. I'm trying to determine if my car was originally an automatic. The prefix on the block is stamped with SD which indicates powerglide but it is equipped with a 4 speed.

The next issue of the Corvette Restorer will have a story by Mike Ernst regarding 1962 dates - you will like it.

I checked, and that story says the stamps are on the right (passenger) side of the differential. We will even have a photo.

Ditto on the location of the Assy Date and Axle Code stamping. Rev Ernst also wrote of this in a Restorer article in the Spring 79 issue. This article includes a sketch of the stamp location. I'm anxious to see what he's added in the next issue. His earlier article was, as always, a quality piece.

Look underneath the heater inlet box on the firewall for a relay, or a couple of mounting holes where a relay might have been. This relay was the powerglide park/neutral starter lockout. (would only enable the starter in park or neutral.) Also look for evidence of a clip on the passenger side of the transmission tunnel for a speedometer cable. The presence of these items would indicate an original powerglide installation. My 61 has both of these, and I'm pretty sure it was originally an auto.
