If so, Mr. "X" must have been real busy. It seems like most of the drums have the "X" and GM probably made millions of these things considering that the same pieces were used on passenger cars, Chevrolet and otherwise.

could have ment that it was inspected and the letter did not refer to any inspector just that it was inspected

it could have been checked for diameter

by a air gauge and the stamp was machine made like the bore sizes on the block pan rails. JMHO

Yes, it's very possible that it was just a "generic" inspection and not specific, at all, as to inspector ID. I was just trying to be "cute". Most all GM manufacturing inspections were "generic".
