      Re: 65-66 steel wheels

Thanks, guys. Interesting--these have no nubs on the center for a small hubcap, as described above. A close look at the 4th wheel indicates a 67 date, which makes it too early for an 8080 wheel. It seems to be identical in every way, except for the welds vs. the rivets on the other three. (and again, this one has the remnants of a GM parts tag). Does anyone have a 67 parts book? Group 5.803 --what does it say for 65-66 wheels? My parts books are each year 56 through 62, and then again October 70. That book specifies that the wheel should be 15x5.50K. What do yours say--JK, or K? Anyone have AMA specs on the wheels?
      Thanks,
      Mike

        Re: 65-66 steel wheels

        Mike,

The May 1966 printing of the parts book calls for the 3869156 and I believe that was the same part number used in production. I'm pretty sure there was an earlier number in the first part of the 65 model year but I don't have it handy. Maybe someone with a 65 AIM can provide that?

The 3838080 was actually a replacement wheel for 63-64, not 65-66. It wasn't the original number for either year, if I remember correctly, but was borrowed from the pass car line to replace the original 63-64 Corvette wheel.

The five wheels for my 66 are all dated ???? 65 and are welded. I've seen a few riveted 65-66 wheels over the years that do look correct but I have no idea why there were two different methods of assembly.

          Re: 65-66 steel wheels

          Michael et al.,
The '65 AIM lists the wheel assembly P/N to be 3864313.

My spare wheel is an original '65 wheel. It is of welded construction and bears GM stamp on front and date code 65 with a 3 inside along with the wheel size.

          Hope this helps.

          Regards,
          Gene

            Re: 65-66 steel wheels

That's what I thought. I knew the 3869156 number for 66 was to high, numerically, to be correct for SOP 65. In fact, it's possible that there was an even earlier (lower) number than the 3864313 for 65.

I wonder if those riveted wheels tat show up from time to time are actually an early 1st design 65, assy'd in late 1964.

I'll look i the 66 AIM to see if there was any revision on the wheel part number. If it's shown as a 3864313 in the 65 AIM, and a 3869156 in the 66 AIM, there's likely to be some record of the change in one of the two AIM's.

My 8_64 rim is not riveted

also my Rev July 1 1965 P&A30 shows the "156". Unfortunately that's the earliest chassis parts book I have.

Well, I guess that eliminates that possibility. I wonder where the riveted wheels are coming from? Could there have been a 2nd supplier? And was the riveted design optional for the suppliers? Wonder what the original print shows.
