but about 40 of the earliest L78's (those w/o power steering) had a steering damper, before they found interference with the oil pan [but not with the PS ram] -- it was subject of a recall via Tech Service Bulletin (I could dig it out). But it looks to me like a N40 cylinder, which could be factory or added.

Everyone's correct -- we need someone to ask the right BB questions on this car. This eBay seller is very knowledgeable.
