I am re-doing a hood I bought at Carlisle a few years back. One of the plates was floating around inside the hood and the other one was missing, I got the plate out and made up a new one, so now I have a pair. I need to know how they stay in position, there seems to be a bracket also on the inside the hood fiberglass which would hold it, it is kind of like a cradle...My question is , how do I get it in this cradle, and what keeps it there. Thanks in advance...Dave

Dave,
This is a fairly common problem with these old hoods. The good news is that the plate you think is missing, probably is not! If the skin has not been off the hood, it is almost impossible to have one fall out. The plates are held loosely in place by a U shaped strap which is riveted to the underside hood reinforcment. If you look adjacent to the hinge locations, you will see the two rivet heads on each side. The strap is most likely still there, and the plates have just slipped out of the strap and fallen down inside the hood structure somewhere. With a lot of shaking and beating on the hood with a rubber hammer, you can probably get the plates to fall back down to the front of the hood where you can get them back in the straps. The plates have a narrow section in the middle and are wider at each end, which in theory, will keep the plates from falling out, but it don't allways work out that way!
Once you get the plates in the front of the hood where you can see them through the access holes, you can usually take a magnet tool and pick up the plate and slip it back into the strap. It will take a while to get the hang of it, but it is not that hard a job. once the plates are back in place, cut the head off a bolt that is about 2" long and screw one in each hinge plate. This will keep the from sliding away again, and you can just insert the headless bolt right through the hood hinge, and only remove it once the other bolt is in place on each side.

Dave...
I shock mine out from the other end, restored it and inserted a thin wire thru the mounting holes, down to were the plate fell out, pulled it up into position and bolted in place with a headless bolt. From there mounting the hood lock hardware in place was simple, by removing the headless bolt last.- Top
