c1 seat frame question

I just picked up a pair of seat frames for my '59, and noticed that the tops have a small section notched out of the metal one one of the 2 upper rails on each frame. My 2 questions are:

1. are they supposed to be this way?
2. if #1 is yes, is this supposed to be towards the outer side or inner side of the car?

I have also included a pic for better detail.

For fear of someone telling me they couldn't see what I was describing, I ran the size image as you initially saw. I have now shrunken the image and will attempt to clarify a bit better.

If you look at the picture, it is of one of the upper/vertical rails of one of my seat frames that I purchased. Towards the top, a small chunk/section appears to have been "cut" out of the vertical rail. It is only on ONE of the 2 vertical rails on that specific seat frame. The other seat frame is the same way, with one of the vertical rails missing a tiny section at the top, just like what is shown in the picture. I'm afraid this is the best way I can describe what I am trying to find out without better describing it in person or on phone.

I'm not worried about the notch if it isn't supposed to be there, as I can simply weld new metal into the area. However I don't want to do that if the frames are supposed to be that way.

If someone has a pair of seat frames lying around that they could look at, or simply pop the cushion off of one of their seats, and look at the pic I have provided in comparison, I'm sure what I'm trying to explain will be more apparent.

I just checked my seat frames on my '58, I think they are the same as '59, and can find nothing you are describing being present on your frames evident on mine.

I looked again, but I cannot see the cut. I have a set of 1959 seat frames from an old car I had. Take a magic marker or chalk and mark the piece unless you have photo editing software that allows adding an arrow to the picture. Then republish the picture.

It's not a case of CRS, I just cannot ID what you are focused on.
