'62 Plexiglass/hard top cleaners and storage.

I am restoring a highly neglected/damaged, barn stored '62. I am working on the disassembly and I am wondering on the best cleanser for the plexiglass from the hard top. It currently has the sealant that was used to seal the plexi to the weatherstrip around the perimeter, and I don't want to use something that would fog it, or that is to harsh on the plexi to remove it. Any ideas?

    Thanks for any help,

    Erik

I have had pretty good success using rubbing compound to clean really rough plexiglass.Didn't look brand new when I was done, but the improvement was dramatic. Obviously some caution is advised.

I have had good luck with Meguiars products for cleaning and polishing plastic and vinyl rear windows, such as in my 66 convertible top. I THINK the product numbers are #10 and #17. One is a cleaner, the other a polish. I don't have the products with me, but one came in a white plastic bottle, the other blue. It is obvious when you see them. When I started, my 66 convertible rear window was beginning to yellow and started showing signs of going opaque. I tried the Meguiars on the recommendation of a friend and it has at least restored the window enough to use. It is very difficult to clean it because of the angles. Perhaps you would have better luck with a top that you can turn over and really get some proper work angles on. Gary

        Erik,

My 66 removalable hardtop was just restored. The guy who painted the car and restored the top buffed the plexiglass window using compound and glaze that he uses on the regular paint. The original plexiglass is nearly perfect. He did say that he can get most plexiglass windows to look good with the exception of ones that have the spider web look. Those tiny cracks can not be repaired.

He only does vette body and paint and I love going there to see many vettes in varying degrees of completion.

        Best regards,

          Erik-----

I, too, recommend the use of Meguiars Mirror Glaze products for your plexiglass. These products have been for MANY years the "standard" of the industry in aviation for plexiglass window maintenence.

Erik: Just a shot in the dark, would your 1962 be VIN 20867S107322? I'm trying to find my old 1962 which I have discovered has not been registrated for at least 10+ years. So it's either been in storage or has been destroyed. Thanks, Tim 26883

Tim, Sorry but this one is about 3000 cars or so later. I will e-mail the SN# and a short history. It's a one owner car that has been parked since 1969 with a little over 70000 miles on it. Everything left in one piece should be original, since the original owner isn't into the maintenance side of things. I have been finding some interesting bodyshop/GM shortcuts that vary from the AIM and shop manual. I didn't know if the rest of the history would be worth posting on the board. Thanks.

A friend recommended "Goof-off" for the sealant removal, and has used it on their C4. Has anyone else tried it?

Incidentally, I am heading out to get the Mcguiar's for the cleaning before the storage.
