    Re: Garage slab questions

When I did mine five years ago (44' x 58'), we laid a 10-mil poly moisture barrier first, then laid 4' x 8' sheets of 1/2"-thick tongue-and-groove high-density closed-cell foam with heavy foil on both sides on top of the poly before setting the mesh and pouring the slab; ZERO moisture migration, good insulation - it's always warm and dry.

Re: Not that this will change your thinking...but

When we built my dad's garage in '76, we poured three slabs. Center was 20' x 24', each end was 12' x 24'. Steel wire mesh reinforcing, basically 2x4 wire fence-type material. Pour was 6 inches deep, roughly, with extra thickness around the pit opening and in the general area of the inner upright main beam supports on both seams. Slabs were split by 1/2 inch fiberboard.

As of 9 years ago, there were no cracks. It is located near St. Louis so it suffers from hot and cold and is near the refineries so it gets shaken daily.
