I have gone thru 3 rebuilt starters in three years. The first one was completey distroyed(armature broke)and I noted that the hot wire to the solonoid was burnt. I replaced the starter and the wiring harness. Next year the gear becme stripped and I had it replaced with another rebuilt. Recently the starter began to slip and grind finally locking-up. I now see that the hot wire to the solonoid is burnt and when I try put the ignition into start all power is lost for a minute (all interior light go off). Whats wrong?

Re: C2 1966 BB starter problem
I agree. In 1983, I installed a NEW Delco starter in the 66 425 HP car and in the probably 20,000 miles since, there has never ever been even the first hint of a problem. No heat shields and no fancy relays. Even drove that car on the 1984 NCRS road tour through all the 125 deg canyons to Copper Mtn and never a problem on restarts.
The other part of the fix is a decent set of battery cables. Very important. I don't know who makes good cables today but it's critical. I have no idea if the reproduction spring rings will do the job. You may have to save those for show and install some heavier cables.- Top
