    C2 Door Handle Advise

If anyone is installing new outside door handles and push buttons this information may be helpful. It appears that the rod on the push button is longer than the original...at least on the ones that I purchased which were made by Trim. This causes the release mechanism to be partially depressed when the handle is bolted down. The simple fix is to cut the extra length off. You can use the old buttons as a guide. What I can't understand is why Trim makes them this way unless it's the old "one size fits all" or I got a set made for the 63 door or some other GM application.

    Mark.
Are the handles sitting straight horizontal as viewed from the front or rear of the car? I notice a majority of the repo handles point upward as assembled on the car. It appears those repos are one type fit all. Corvette door handles as original sit flat horizontal. I wonder if that may be the issue.

Gene, I used to think the door handles were horizontal too.... but they indeed are not. They have an upward tilt to them. Check some of the original survivor photos and you see what I mean. I have a photo of a 6800 mile 67 car if you want to take a look. I don't know how to post photos on this site. I guess I better learn.......

Gene and Steve. Thanks for the response. However, there is no mistake in the longer length of the rod. When the buttons are removed from the handle and placed side by side the lenght of the original is approx. 1/4" to 3/8" shorter. Just wanted whoever may have an issue to be aware of it. I would also speculate that this could be a cause for a PV failure as there is no "free" movement of the button when the longer rod is used.

          Mark,

The only door handle button that GM ever sold was a somewhat universal unit that required some mod for use on many models. The pin end of the button was long enough to fit the vehicle that required the longest pin and all other applications required "triming" to match the length of the original replaced part. Originally, the GM part included the instructions for this.

I don't know if these buttons are now reproduced but, if so, I would guess that the same "cut to fit" rule applies for the same reason.

            Hi Mark:

I bought a pair of buttons from Paragon and the rods were too long on them as well. I think these are generic replacements that work for other GM models but need to be cut down for C2 Corvettes.
