    Voltage regulator

In most pics of original voltage (1966 coupe 327) regulators there is a resistor behind it towards the steering wheel anyone know a manufacturer who sells this item? My suppliers do not show it in their diagrams, also does anyone know if this item is still available from GM?

    Re: Voltage regulator

    Gary,
This is not a resistor. It is a capacitor. Check with Doc Rebuild, Paragon, LICS and Joe Ray Parts if you need one

      Re: Voltage regulator

Wire wound resistor(s) are an integral part of the voltage regulator and they're riveted in place to the back side of the regulator's case. When the regulator is installed (screwed to the inner fender) these components of the regulator cannot be seen...

Now, if you're unsure about what you're talking about (is the item you refer to actually a resistor?) and the car was equipped with optional AM/FM radio, then a CAPACITOR (Delco Remy, 1946086) was installed onto the side of the voltage regulator's case and this CAN be seen, refer to option section U69 of your Assembly Instruction Manual.

The original Delco Remy 1964086 capacitor has long since been discontinued/superceeded by a functional replacement that's easy to visually distinguish from the factory original part as its physical packaging differs from those used when the car was built (different PN on the body of the capacitor, added lead wire reinforcement to thwart fatigue fracture, and different material used to insulate the lead wire's terminating connector).

Cleaned/tested originals come up on eBay from time to time and service replacement substitutes, I believe, are available from Chevy as well as various Corvette catalog houses. The purpose of the capacitor was to thwart switching transient noise from interfering with radio reception as the voltage regulator turned the alternator ON/OFF to maintain battery charge....

Oops, knew it was a capacitor but had resistor on the brain when writing this post....
