Has anyone had good experiences with sand blasting and repainting steel wheels? If so, what was the process involved? I know that the wheels were dipped semi-gloss black then the face was painted gloss black originally. I am reluctant to powder-coat the wheels as they would no longer look similar to the factory finish and also will not judge correctly (over-restored). I have been told to media-blast the wheel then use a self-etching primer and then paint with a paint sprayer, not a aerosol can, using a single stage urethane semi-gloss black for the rim and back side then use a gloss black single stage urethane for the face. I have also been told to use Krylon BBQ paint #1618 semi gloss black for the rim and back side then a gloss black for the face.

Krylon BBQ 1618 is too flat. Use Krylon 1613 or equivalent.
Sand blast is pretty hard on the finish of the steel. You'd need to sand it before you paint it to smooth. If your wheels aren't rusty, use soda blast, it's easy on the metal and cleans the paint right off.- Top

Sounds like some good advice here. If wheel is powdercoated in semi-gloss black and then the front is painted with a gloss black, what type of paint should be used? I understand that some paints are not compatible with the powdercoated finishes.- Top
