66 427/390 TI Distributor Cap

My understanding is that the correct distributor cap for a 66 427/390 hp car with TI is a Delco Remy D-308. Is this correct? Are used originals difficult to come across? What do they usually cost? The car will eventually be shown. Does anyone have any advise on whether it's worth the time, effort and money to acquire an original or just go with a replacement? Thanks in advance for your help.

A D-308 is the cap originally used for your application. The originals had the Delco-Remy script and no "R". These things come up for auction all of the time on eBay in both used and NOS condition. The price depends upon what someone is idiotic enough to pay at that particular time. My recommendation: use a current Delco replacement cap which is D-308R and GM #12363081. This cap has no external markings but is otherwise pretty much identical to the original. Cost is about 10 bucks from a Delco dealer.

Thanks Joe,

As always your input is highly valued and appreciated. I hope I don't turn into one of those idiots. My wife wouldn't put up with it. Would your recommendation be the same if I intended to show the car? I suspect that the point deductions would be minor.

Hector, one of our my distinguished members likes to talk about points per dollar. Since some of us (me) don't have unlimited budgets, you have to take a look and see how many points you lose for a Delco replacement cap. Then take a look at a good used or NOS cap and see what that would cost. Often the few extra points for an original item is simply not worth the stratospheric price. A repro or replacement part often takes a very minor points deduction, and some of those points are made up because your repro/replacement doesn't lose any condition points. You can get the judging sheets for your car as well as the judging guide and you will know how many points any item is and what is taken off for condition or for repro/replacement items.
