C2 small block won't start after rebuild

Can someone recommend a source for trouble shooting information? I recently pulled '67 327-350 engine; returned to its original condition--- "new" cam, lifters, intake and exhaust manifolds, rings, bearings, etc. Now I can't get it to start. Used GM assembly manuals during rebuild. Engine turns over but won't start. Same (original) distributor used, new plug wires, etc.
I did not replace push rods, the engine had an "after market" cam before rebuild. What is the overall length of original push rods ??? Thanks for any suggestions. Member#42277

    Kent-----

It's very hard to say what the cause of the problem could be; there are so many things that can cause this condition. As a first step, I'd want to ensure that the engine is getting fuel and is getting spark. Absent those two things, you will DEFINITELY get a no start condition.

Also, are you sure that you have the timing set installed correctly and are you sure that the valves are adjusted properly? How did you adjust the valves?

ALL original small block pushrods for use with flat tappet engines (hydraulic or mechanical) type are 7.724" long.

      Kent,

Assuming you've checked for spark(at the plug) and gas, make sure your distributor is installed correctly, with the rotor facing around the middle of the right valve cover with the #1 piston at TDC. The timing can be so far off as to not allow the engine to start. Also the point gap being too far off will not allow starting as well. Try these starting points and I'm sure you'll receive other, more in depth suggestions.

        Kent,

If you're getting spark and gas, try setting the initial gap on the points to .019, then adjust the dwell to specs when you get it running.

All of the above are good points to check. Make sure you are at TDC and not 180 deg out. Remember the piston is also at the top on the exhaust stroke so you need to know if you are on the compression stroke. If the valve covers are off just look to see that both valves are closed on #1 cylinder and the timing mark is at TDC. Then install your distributor per above...

I agree with Steve. When you install the cam and timing chain and line up the "dots" on the two gears you are usually top dead center on #6 and not on #1. As Steve said 180 degrees out of timing.
