Can the bushing in the extension housing be R&R'd with the trans still in the car?

Re: 4 speed muncie ext . bushing
I see I can't remove the extension housing, but hoped if I pulled the rear seal the bushing might be accessible. Negotiating around the mainshaft may be impossible.(assuming it removes to the rear). Thanks for the advice- Top

There is absolutely no way to do this. The transmission must be removed from the car and the extension housing removed from the transmission in order to replace the bushing. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I can't speak for automatic transmissions, but I cannot see how any tool could remove the extension housing bushing on a Muncie (or, a T-10) without removing the extension housing from the transmission. The bushing is installed virtually flush with the inner boss. The tail shaft obviously fits with a very close clearance to the bushing. So, the only portion of the bushing that is "exposed" is the very end. I can see no way to "grab" this and pull it out, which is what would have to be done. I suppose the bushing could be driven in and out of the extension housing bore but that would leave the bushing in the transmission and that would not do, at all.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 4 speed muncie ext . bushing
Figures. Mr Driveshaft, (thats the name), insisted it was the right piece. I get 3 7/8" . thats 1/4 more. When I put it in for a trail fit, it bottomed out and I couldn't get the joint into it. Also measured the yokes tubular section sticking out of the seal and got 1 1/8". I guess its a tight fit, but I hope 1/4" will allow enough clearance. Don't know transmissions, but I thought the yoke would push futher into the extension. Hope its not hitting something it shouldn't
Going to give the guy, (Ed Hartnett), who built it was back when for me a call tomorrow. Nice guy. Familiar with NCRS.- Top

If all else is right, you could have the end machined to shorten it. If you do, make sure that the end chamfer is also restored.
Ed Hartnett is a great source for transmission parts as is Larry Fischer. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Yoke should go ALL the way into the trans, with the flange on a new yoke up against the seal if all is well...Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 4 speed muncie ext . bushing
Hi Dennis,
You can do it in the car, but for the added work of popping off the shifter linkages, disconnecting the backup light switch wires, speedometer cable and finally the four bolts to the bell housing, I'd pull it and get it on a work bench where you can properly attack it.

Chuck- Top
