    66 engine Maintenance

My 66 roadster was given a frameoff restoration in 2000.The 327/350 L79 engine was rebuilt as well.Due to my job and young family I have only put about 250 miles on the car since it was restored.I change the oil each fall(Mobil 1 Synthetic)and was wondering how often the other fluids such as antifreeze, brake fluid and gear oil should be changed as well.Any winter storage tips as well would be appeciated.I do disconnect the battery when I am not using the car due to a slight draw that occurs. Thanks for the tips members.

Engine oil: every year if only posting 250 miles.tranny and rear end: every 5 years should be plenty(just changed the rear end gear oil in our 29 chevy and did the 54 vette's rear at 40 plus years. both gear lubes , being 40 plus and 76 years old, still performed adequately) so i'd guess every 5 years in your vette will be sufficeint. i change antifreeze every 5 years regarless of milage on our old chevys.if you're using silicone brake fluid, i'd guess it would last indefinitly. dot brake fluids get changed every 5 years or so on our infrequently used vintage bowties.mikie

      Ric,
I used to put Mobil One oil in my 67 L79 but after reading many posts from Duke Williams about motor oil, I took his suggestion and advice and switched to diesel engine oil. In a nut shell, diesel oil has more cleaning additives, which our less used engines need. Check the archives.

In addition to using HD diesel engine oil, I would be concerned about gasoline aging. It's best to drive the car AT LEAST enough to consume a tank of gasoline per year, and fill it up prior to winter.

The clock does not run on fresh oil if the car is in storage, but IT DOES run on brake fluid and antifreeze, even if it's new, and both degrade faster at operating temperature, so if your car is only seeing 50 miles a year it is probably okay to go four to five years, but IMO you should try to drive the car at least enough to consume a tank of fuel per year, which would be about 250 miles or so, and change the brake fluid and antifreeze at least every three years and use Zerex G-03 antifreeze and DOT 4 brake fluid.
