    Pitman Arm retainer

Is the nut and lock washer that retain the pitman arm painted. My feeling is that they are NOT, because I can't figure out WHEN they would have been in place when black paint was fogging the air .... comments please.

    Loren,

It's my understanding that they are not painted, nor is the pitman arm. Can't remember where I read it.

      Re: Pitman Arm retainer

Loren, the Pitman arm nut and lock washer are NOT painted - they were loose parts applied at assembly. The pitman arm, however, was part of the steering linkage assembly made at Chevrolet-Buffalo; that assembly was (poorly) painted at Buffalo with "chassis black" (the cheapo asphalt-based black paint that never dried, but washed off in the rain), but some attempt was made to protect the pitman arm from excess overspray to keep it out of the splines that mated with the pitman shaft on the steering gear. The end of the pitman arm that connects to the relay rod may have some chassis black on it, but it's doubtful that the steering gear end had much more than random light overspray, if any.

Thank you. We'll wait to see if other "countries" are heard from - with an explanation as to when the pieces "got black".
