    Re: Engine Hooks

    Guys,

This is a most interesting topic. All of the big blocks assembled in the
Impala's, Camaro's, Nova's, and Chevelles had factory engine hoist brackets.
One was attached to the intake ( two front bolt locations ) on the drivers
side, while the other was attached to the back of the passenger side head
in one of the accessory mounting holes. These applications included:
    L-35, L-34, L-78, L-89, L-72

Would it not stand to reason that these brackets were already mounted to the
engines as they came down the line? If so, why weren't they used. Now, I'm
not as well versed on the big block Vettes, so please enlighten me.....

    Steve

That Chevelle is not my project. Sold the Suburban in driving condition (unless you count the two windows shot out by the neighborhood ruffians) to the Chevelle owner.

Same brackets on the 1968+ Corvette fat motors.

          Re: Engine Hooks

I understand your calculations. I don't know what tilting the assembly did to the loading.
I torqued the intake manifold bolts before the assembly was lifted Duke, so I wouldn't have expected the seepage I got. Perhaps my reason for the seepage has no engineering merit, but the green fluid was obvious on the fresh paint. Next time (if there is a next time) I will do it differently.

Could a "load leveler" be used with the manifold flange lift plate ?

Re: What are the Hooks attached to?

Not the load levelers I am familiar with. The ones I have seen, and used, have four chains, two attached to each end. For optimum utility each of those chains should go to a corner of the engine. It isn't always possible to get an attaching point at each corner, but as close to a corner as possible is your best and safest bet. I don't know how those four chains going to one central location could work with the load leveler, unless there is a different style.

With the central lift point one can often tilt the engine enough by hand to get it aligned with the attaching points.
