Repainting Midyear Side Exhaust Rocker Moulding

I want to repaint the black strip on the rocker moulding used with midyear side exhaust. Any ideas on prep and type of paint to use?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Mike:

The "spears" should be lightly painted with semigloss black. Krylon "semiflat" works well.
Mask the area, and carefully scuff with Scotchbrite pad, or similar. Clean with prep-sol, then tack, apply three light coats.
Be careful not to scuff the clear anodized aluminum.

      Mike,

Joe has given you good advice. I would just add that you should wipe them down with the prep-sol before doing any sanding or scuffing of the previous paint so you don't work any wax or other contamination into it. Also use a very fine scuff pad. If there are nicks or chips in the previous paint you will need to feather sand them and possibly prime and sand out so you have a nice smooth surface for the new paint.

        Mike,

I've used Krylon semi-flat myself for years on various parts. I now use Plasticote semi-gloss instead. I've found that it more closely matches GM's original semi-gloss. It's just a bit less flat than Krylon. Try them both some time on a spare part and see what you think. You can't go wrong either way.
