Track has to be Daytona, which they are running "backwards" (The photo is not reversed per the number 42 on the special behind the #88 Corvette.)

IIRC Daytona opening in 1959, so I suspect this photo is from the first season of operation.

I don't recognize the drivers. I was only twelve at the time.

      Daytona is correct!

Now I just need to determine what car this is and who the drivers are pictured.. Looks like my 57 factory team car..but mine was retired and sold in 1958. This must be '59

Possibly another one of the fuel injected team cars..or a privately owned entry!. Maybe a Rosenthal or Racing Enterprises/Doane car?

Roll bar is different than mine ..looks bigger.

Written on the back of this picture..

      Halftime for Daytona Program Cover..

Also..appears the same as the paste up pictures used in the NASCAR...The Racing BEE newsletters.

I agree Duke. Pretty sure the track was run in reverse at some of their road racing events, and the infield became part of the road course. If you look at the #88 Corvette, you can see that he is beginning his turn in, off the original course, onto the road coarse. I think this was later than 1959 though. Probably 1960 or 61? I believe the original 1959 configuration of the guard rail was changed and the number of vertical posts was doubled??

Joe, Maybe I'm wrong, but the driver closest the bottom of the picture looks like a young Junior Johnson.

Could be Junior Johnson..I will have to study some more.

A guy in North Carolina bought out the archives of the printing company that produced the programs , newsletters etc for NASCAR for years.

He said he has thousands of pictures, original pit passes etc..

The picture above is one that he sent me...knowing I have a Corvette racecar.

It is the actual picture with the drivers pictures pasted on to it that they used for the printing job.

The order sheet on the back..says the customer is Daytona International Speedway.Pretty cool real vintage material.

I don't think it's Junior. Junior's neck was about 6" wider and he only had one eyebrow that went all the way across. Way big guy then, and now.

Could the guy in the top photo be Sam Jaffe from the tv series Doctor Kildare?

Definetly Not Junior. I think that the first (and only time) that he ran a Corvette around Daytona was in '63 with one of the Grand Sports. He made one lap at speed. He went down the back straight at somewhere around 180 and tried to turn the car. He said he had NO steering wheel response. He came back in the pits and told Zora "you SOBS are crazy if you thing that I am going to drive that car". (this is what Zora related to me about 20-25 years ago)

                        Junior Johnson Daytona 1963

Junior's appearance in the American Challenge Cup race on February 17, 1963 was part of Mickey Thompson's team, which consisted of four Z06's. On February 11th, qualifying day, Junior ran the fastest at 162 mph and qualified on the pole position. Junior drove one of the two "427" Corvettes to qualify that day. The other was driven, by NASCAR legend, Rex White and qualified on the outside pole. On race day, February 16th., Junior got into the car drove several practice laps pulled into the pits and told Mickey the suspension settings had been changed and I quote "Car Didn't Act Right, Junior Got Out" Daytona Beach Sunday News-Journal, February 17th. Bill Krause drove Junior's silver Z06 to a third place finish behind Paul Goldsmith's wining 63 421 Pontiac Tempest and second place finisher AJ Foyt driving Nickey Chevrolet's white 327 Z06.

Rain, Rain, Rain was the weather conditions for race day and significantly effected the "427 Z06's" performance. At the start Rex White was sitting on the outside pole and after completing several laps retired into the pits, a very upset Rex got out. When over to Mickey explaining how the cockpit filled with steam and was unable to see the other racecars or track. Mickey immediately got into the racecar dove one lap and permanently retired the car. Both car's were modified with thru the frame exhaust and aluminum floors, add a little rain, creating the ideal atmosphere for steam/fog inside the cockpit.

Mickey never received one of the Grand Sports and unfortunately, Junior never had the opportunity to drive one in competition. Frederic Donner, GM's Chairman, reiterated the corporation's position to support the AMA's (Automotive Manufactures Association) ban factory supported race programs. It's common knowledge the Grand Sports were all "private" entrees.

After the Second Continental Race on February 17th. and the AMA's ban in effect Mickey disbanded the race team. The 427 engines and one of the Z06's were returned to CEC (Chevrolet engineering) and the other three cars were shipped to Mickey's speed shop in Long Beach. Two of the four Daytona Z06's survive: 1. the silver 427 car lives in California and enjoys a life as a vintage racer 2. silver 327 car lives in Detroit for the enjoyment of it's owner. The two missing cars are the white 427 Z06 along with Hooper's Riverside wining Daytona Blue 327 car. Note: The white 427 car should not be confused with Mickey's personal driver another white production Z06. Mickey's driver was part of the advertising campaign introducing his new "Radar" mag wheel.
