    Good Laugh

If you find eBay Cars entertaining, see how many changed items you can find on this "low Mileage" car, other than the Brake M/C, Compressor, Belts, Hoses, Valve covers, Exhaust system, Jack,

Probably more like 109431. A very pretty car nonetheless.

Actually, in the Q*A, he did say that it is "untouched", when asked about originality.

The VIN tag has been tampered with...

Looks like the rivets have been popped off.

The Trim Tag Book says the 490AB trim code ECL wasn't used after 3/25/64, and this car was built on the last day of '64 production - should have been "HS" for that late build date. The early "AB" ECL also excluded power windows, which this car has.

The VIN tag looks OK to me - '64's are welded (some poorly), not riveted. However, add to the list: thermostat housing should have bare studs and nuts, not silver bolts; steering box appears to be painted (incorrect); one extra throttle spring; temp sender wire has no clips and is on wrong side of engine.

Very nice car. Definitely not an untouched though. No blackout on hood hinges, lower A arm hardware, steering box bolts, etc. Exhaust system is definitely new. Paint looks way too nice to be original. Looks like it has been restored, or heavily detailed.

                    Patrick -

                    64's had spot-welded VIN plates - rivets didn't start until 1965.

                      Trim Tag is Suspicious

490AB is St.Louis code for a red vinyl convertible, EXCLUDING power windows [which this car now(?) has]. This from the "exception letter schedule" used from start of production to 25th March 1964, as found in Noland's Vol 2, or the new NCRS Authentication Library Vol 1, by Grenning/Sinor.

But this car is only a few days away from end of production, in July. If the car was using early ECL-chart production, WITH A31 should show a trim of 490AG. If post-25th March chart, would be 490HS (red vinyl convertible with A31, C60, U69).The Grenning/Sinor reference does allow that "original examples of St.Louis bodies show 'later version' ECL chart usage, past March 25th 1964".

My guess is this car has 9430 miles since "restoration" (note non-original font on odometer). Also, fan "spider" seems to have squared-off ends ('66-'67 era ?). Too bad there aren't more engine bay shots for our amusement.

Valve covers have casting flaw through the O which I understand didn't occur until sometime in 65. Am I wrong? Could the casting flaw be seen in late 64?

Actually mid-66 is about where you would first expect to see the flaw, not on a '64 or '65

                              Bill,

--------I actually E-mailed this fella when I saw the auction as the car appears to have a later model shift-handle (68 up). I recieved no answer to my question of how a late model shifter could have gotten in an original low mileage 64!.........Bill S
