    63 Z06 Options

I understand that there are two (2) options of the Z06 package for 1963. One being the large finned breaks, metalic linnings with a vaccum boosted power duel circuit master cyclinder. The second being everything mentioned with a 36 gal. fuel tank and no radio. Can someone set the record straight for me.

    Thanks Jim Hicks

Big tank option was not exclusive to the Z 06. Could be had with any engine. Z 06 could be had with or without radio. I am a dedicated big block fan, (REAL CORVETTES HAVE 7 BOLTS IN EACH VALVE COVER) but the Z 06 is one of the most fun cars to drive that I have ever been in...plenty of power and one of the best handling mid years that I have ever driven

      Re: 63 Z06 Options

      Jim,

The original Z06 option included the HD metallic brakes, HD suspension, 36.5 gal fuel tank and Aluminum KO wheels. It was only available in the coupe. Soon after intro, the option was changed and the KO wheels were deleted from the list.

Some time in late 1962 or early 1963, it was decided that the Z06 option would be broken up and become available without the 36.5 gal fuel tank. The N03 36.5 gallon fuel tank then became a separate option and was available in coupe only with or without the Z06 package. This made the Z06 option available in the conv as well as the coupe. One such Z05 conv is known to exist.

The Z06 option also required the optional 4-speed transmission and positraction diff.

A radio could have been ordered in any 1963 Corvette, including the Z06.

come on now Papa S..... The real reason those

big blocks have 7 bolts in each valve cover is to help retain all the pieces from shelled valve train components anytime ya tromp on 'em real good...

Thats OK though, us mouse guys will agree with your assessment on the Zee Ott Six... Heck fire, I'll bet Mikey's car help ya come to that revelation.

Hang in there bro, sounds like you are on the road to recovery.

          Re: 63 Z06 Options

Both Z-06 versions included L84, M20, and G81 with any of the six available ratios from 3.08 to 4.56:1 The only unique equipment on the second version (released in Feb. '63) were the HD drum brakes and HD suspension.

For 1964 the HD brakes and HD suspension were broken out into separate options - J56 and F40, so for 1964 you could order all of the original Z06 bundled equipment including KO wheels (NO3 remained only available on Coupes) as separate options. You could build a "Z-06 equivalent '64" by ordering all the equipment that was in either of the two '63 Z-06 versions, and there are a lot fewer of these than the 199 Z06 equipped '63s.

            Re: 63 Z06 Options

The L84, M20 and G81 had to be ordered separately, even though they were included in the package price of a Z06.

The option split, officially, on 17 December, 1962 and became available on 20 December. The Z06 and N03 options could then be ordered separately.

TC, I restored a silver/red Z-06 tanker about 10-12 years ago. Got it ready for Performance Verification. Probably drove the car every day for two weeks before taking it to the meet. Had a ball. Absolutely the best running FI car that I ever drove.

                Duke,
I've read some comments about the Z-06 option not being available for the '64 model, but I have a '64 Chevrolet Finger Tip Facts book that does list RPO Z-06 as being available on the '64 Corvette. It describes the various features of the option, including some cut-away photos. The description matches the (later) '63 RPO Z-06 package.
Perhaps it was planned as of the printing of my book, but later cancelled as a bundled option? According to this book, I could have walked into my Chevrolet dealer in Sept. '63 and ordered a new '64 Z-06.

                  Re: 63 Z06 Options

I suspect it was either a printing error, or a last minute decision was made to not offer the Z-06 package, but unbundle it to separate options.

In any event, no publication I have ever seen, including the NCRS Spec Guide lists Z-06 as an available option with any build quantitites for 1964.

There were on 29 J-56 options installed in 1964, so assuming these 29 cars also had F-40, L-84, M-20, and G81 this is the upper bound for the number of "'64 Z-06 equivalents".

I do not know if it was available, but Z06 was included on the dealer order from for 1964 for at least part of the year, as I have recently seen one with a Z06 box. I will try to get a copy of that dealer order form and post it.
