I have installed a new 4-speed shifter for the muncie in my 67 BB but need help regarding the locating gage. I have inserted the gage through the two levers on the shifter for the 1st through 4th gears but I cannot locate a slot for the gage to insert in the reverse lever. Is there a slot in the reverse lever for the gage to be inserted? If not, how do I align the reverse rod to the correct length? The instructions and manual do not answer the questions. Your help and installation suggestions will be appreciated since I am now at a standstill and want to get it right the first time because access for adjustment is extremely difficult.

Re: four speed linkage alignment
The gage block will pass thru the 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th shifter arms and "behind" the reverse arm. The reverse arm must be pushed "forward" as observed from under the car. It won't look "aligned" with the other 2 arms. Insure that you have everything aligned by sliding the shifter handle inside the car sideways as if in neutral. Also slide it sideways into the neutral position for reverse. If you can pass thru all these positions smoothly then you have your gage block installed correctly.
After you get this done then adjust the 1st/2nd shaft length with the transmission in neutral aligning the holes in the transmission arm. Now proceed to the 3rd/4th arm also with the transmission arm in neutral and adjust the nuts along the shaft to the proper length.
Lastly adjust the reverse shaft length using the nuts.
Now take it out and run 'er thru the gears!!!!

Re: four speed linkage alignment
Paul:
The alignment tool (only a pin, similar to a shortened 20d nail) is simply an aid, but not necessary if you are careful in your adjustments. AFAIK, the most important purpose of the alignment tool is to insure symmetry on both sides of the neutral gate for the 1-2 throw, and the 3-4 throw.
Case in point: I recently changed over to the "short throw" setup on my Muncie linkage. I had a rough time inserting the pin from underneath, so I set it up without using the pin. I found the point of "zero interferance" across the neutral gate with the 1-2, 3-4 rods disconnected. Carefully set and attached both rods at that shifter position, with the trans in neutral. After checking for full throws and full travel of the trans forks, road tested. I will never go back to the standard setting. It shifts real fast, and smooth.
The same procedure should be used for the reverse rod. Get the shifter in the neutral gate. Be sure that the transmission reverse gear is disengaged. Adjust the reverse rod, and attach.

Joe,
See, I knew you'd like the short throw shifter. I was so sure you would that I almost offered to drive to New Jersey and change it back if you didn't like it.- Top

Re: four speed linkage alignment
Hey Michael,
You were right, alright! The difference is staggering. IMHO, this should be the standard setting, and the long throw should be reserved for the physically challenged. There is one problem, though. It's now so much fun to drive, that I can't stay out of the car for long. Why, would you believe that last night I woke up and found myself sitting in the driver's seat and stirring the gearbox? No. I didn't think so.
Thanks for the tip. And you're welcome to stop on by any time you find yourself in the neighborhood.
