Re: 1963 eng. stamping

The proper series of numbers and letters was placed in a gang holder. The gang holder was placed on the engine stamp pad (before the heads were installed on the engine) and struck with a large hammer.
In some cases, the gang holder may have contained only the "F" prefix with the engine build date. Then, the suffix code may have been added with individual stamps.
I believe that the assembly station where the stamping was done had a number of gang holders set up with the "F" prefix (never changed), the date (changed daily) and various suffix codes for the engines predominantly being built. In this manner, the worker at that station did not need to continually change the suffix codes----just use the gang holder with the proper suffix code for the engine.
When I visited the Flint engine plant in 1992 and observed the stamping operation, this was how it was being done. I don't think that the process really changed a whole lot over the years. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
