    67 Interior Dye Question

My 67 has a blue and white interior. The dash panels are blue and there are some pieces that need to be redyed. I have purchased bright blue and medium blue dyes from several suppliers (Al Knoch included) and all of them are a much lighter shade of blue than original. The original dash color I am looking at has been hidden under the dash pad so it is unlikely that it has been dramatically darkened due to weather or aging. My question is, has anyone been able to locate a source of interior dye for this application that is the correct shade of blue? I have even tried to obtain custom matched blends with very little success. Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.

    Jim ----

It's unfortunate that reproducers have mistaken the blue of the white-blue '67 interior for a bright blue, totally missing the correct shade by a mile. At one time, carpet sets of the correct color and excellent fit were available from ACC. Heresay in recent times indicates their quality of fit leave something to be desired. Obtaining the dye color may be experimental until you arrive at the correct mixture. When restoring my '67, we tried several times to find the matching shade of medium blue for the instrument panel and never found the right formula. If you do, please post it and submit your findings to the Corvette Restorer for us all. Good luck with your restoration.

Thanks for your reply Kent. I'm still hoping someone will have found, and be able to connect me to, the right supplier. Until that time, I'm going to continue the search on my own. I'll definitely let the board know if I come up with the right match.

        Jim,

I don't know if this will help, but, I still have about 6 bottles of a product from GM called Dye-Nu or something like that that I bought over 30 years ago and used to dye the carpet in my 66 (Med Bright Blue). I was just looking at it the other day and was going to throw it out but it still looked like it may be good so I kept. You mix it with water. Let me know if interested and I'll get you the correct name, part number, color etc. You are welcome to try it if you want.

          Ron,

Thanks for the offer. I'm currently working with a vinyl dye manufacturer that feels he may be able to match the color of my interior if given a small sample of the original vinyl. I'm hoping he can. If not, I'll definitely be back to you for the product description you offered.

            Jim,

Let me know how youj make out with the dye. I am going through similiar problem now with door panels for my 66. Don't know if you saw my post yesterday about it, but briefly, I had my originals redone bt Al Knoch last month and the color was way too bright (Med bright blue)and did not match rest of interior. They told me NCRS guys requested change in color. They are going to dye them (said they have done before and it worked) to match the "Old" Med bright blue color. I can't wait to see how they turn out, will have in about a week. Anyway, good luck with yours and if you want to try some of the old dye I have I will be happy to send you a bottle or two.
