HI GUYS I HAVE A QUESTION THAT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY . THE QUESTION IS I AM IN THE PROCESS OF BUYING A 1967 427/400 CORVETTE, THE TANK STICKER WAS EMAILED TO ME AND IT LOOKS OLD AND STUFF LIKE THAT. IT HAS WRITTEN ON IT IN PEN OR PENCIL #405 IN THE LOWER RIGHT HAND SIDE!BUT I ALSO GOT EMAILED PICTURES OF THE CAR BEFORE RESTORATION OF THE CAR AND INSIDE THE 2 DOOR PANALS WRITTEN BY HAND IN MARKER 268 268 THE NUMBER 268 SHOWES UP SEVERAL TIMES ON THE CAR WHY ARE THE NUMERES DIFFRENT?????????????? PLEASE HELP..THANKS

First, turn off your "Caps Lock" key - makes your post hard to read and implies that you're shouting.
The car's pre-printed VIN didn't show up on tank stickers until sometime in 1971. Other hand-written numbers on it relate to the Body Shop Job Number (on some fiberglass body panels) and to the Final Assembly Sequence number (on the inside of the door trim panels, etc.), and neither of these will necessarily match the car's VIN.
Comparing the "Expected Date Of Production" on the tank sticker against the car's final assembly date (derived from the VIN) is a better method of determining whether the tank sticker is really the one for that car.- Top

The numbers in Chalk on the doors and body panels "268" were an internal job number for the initial body assembly before paint etc. This number typically appears on the passenger footarea of the firewall visible from outside the car, on each door internally, and on the rear outside bulkhead by the fuel tank.
The "405" on the tank sticker (usually written in the upper right quadrant next to the "trim" and "engine" lines,about 3/4" high) is a number that was assigned to the chassis assembly. On a '67 it typically is 1 or 2 numbers ahead of the actual final 3 numbers of the VIN. This number also repeated after 500 so it could mean that the VIN number will be either xxx406 OR xxx906 or possibly xxx407 or xxx907, if the sticker is for this car.- Top

My view differs on how we define the point at which VINs were preprinted on Corvette Order Copies or after 72, manifests.
VINs were not preprinted until Bowling Green Corvettes in 1981...all those that preceded were typed at the VIN tag station. The font is typically Time Roman...a business standard typestyle until after 78 when we see a bigger font that is non Times Roman...more like a Helvetica. Once BG cars are produced, we see manifests with the identical font style and impression as all other codes...or the OCRM font.
So my definition of preprinted is that the VIN is printed at the same time all other broadcast codes were printed rather than what was typed on the factory floor...after the manifest form was printed with broadcast codes.Tom Russo

The VIN was NOT preprinted on the face of 67-72 CORVETTE ORDER COPY documents.
The last 3 digits of the "future" VIN numbers in increments of 500 numbers were handwritten on the ORDER COPY. These were typically within 2 digits ahead of the actual assigned VIN which was stamped on the frame prior to body drop.
Because this penciled number only went to 500; then if the VIN were XXX502 the penciled number would typically be "1" or "2" and so on.......- Top

The Corvette Order Copy that is usually attached to the top of the fuel tank, during the '68 thru '72 models, contains information printed by a machine, its style of fonts is different than the partial vin that accompanies some of these documents, that style does indeed look to be typed.- Top

A partial vin sequence of the car does indeed appear on some 1971 Corvette Order Copy sheets and on 1972 Corvettes as well.
We normally do not give the exact date of this change, as to not aid with those who would try to improve their forgery skills.- Top
