C-3 1970 coupe valve cover gaskets

Does anyone know if the valve cover gaskets are cork and what torque should be used on the manifold bolts. Thanks in advance see you in PA.

I believe original valve cover gaskets were cork. One key to getting them to seal is to start with a FLAT valve cover and two clean mounting surfaces. The bolts should be lightly torqued to not create distortion to the cover and using the load spreaders in place, if applicable (base engine and LS5 covers). Sorry, I don't have the torque numbers handy.

I believe the alum valve torque is 50-55 in lbs. Just did mine on my 70 L-46. Not holding my breath though. Sealing the lower edge is tough.

The cast iron intake bolt torque is 30 ft lbs. Working the center out.

            Jack------

All original valve cover gaskets for 1970 were cork. They looked like cork, smelled like cork, and, if you were to taste them, would probably taste like cork. If you want to stick with cork just like original, the ONLY way to go (ESPECIALLY WITH THE VALVE COVERS USED FOR YOUR L-46 ENGINE)is to use the original style, "4-holer" type gaskets as avaiable from Dr. Rebuild. If you order from GM or from most aftermarket sources, you will get the "6-holer" type gaskets. To use these on your valve covers, you have to trim away part of the upper portion of the gasket.

If SEALING is your primary concern, then I recommend Fel-Pro Cork-Lam valve cover gaskets of Fel Pro #1604. These appear as cork, but they're a little thicker than stock. They have a steel core and do a much better job of sealing than standard cork. They are "4-holer" configuration, so no t******* is required.
