    1965 Defroster Duct

I am trying to install the defroster duct but there seems to be a 3/4" to 1" gap between the flared end of the defroster duct and the opening in the heater assembly when I bolt the defroster duct up. Does anyone know if this is normal? I have tried pulling the heater assembly box up as far as it will go. Thanks.

If my memory is right (?) I believe there is a gap. I will look tomorrow. Don H.

        Dave,
When I removed the duct from my '65, there was a small gap between it and the heater box. Around a 1/4 as mentioned. I don't see how the gap could be 3/4 to 1 inch without something being incorrect. With that much gap, I doubt that you would have any defroster air.

Check the heater box tab to be sure that it is properly positioned on the firewall stud above the accelerator pedal. If the tab is below the stud, you might have that much gap.

        Good luck,
        Gene

Thanks all for the info. I've got some checking to do, but now know pretty much what to look for. Thanks again.

The gap is correct. It was designed that way on purpose to isolate the defroster duct from the heater box; if they were connected, the duct would become a conduit up to the main instrument panel, which becomes a drumhead and amplifies the heater noise and vibration. Standard Chevy design practice for all car lines.
