the oil pump drive shaft when in it proper state will NOT go in or come out the top of the engine. you need to replace it as it has come apart. i would like to have a dollar for every time someone had put the oil pan on without installing the oil pump drive shaft from the bottom and had to remove the pan.

Clem, do you mean that I need to replace the pump or just the drive shaft?

just the oil pump drive shaft as long as the input shaft on the pump is not messed up.

get a new shaft with steel collar instead of the plastic variety. most auto machine shops stock them. believe they're a mellon(?spelling) product. mike

Thanks for the responses. I took the oil pump off today and sure enough the plastic collar was split and had slipped position. Think I'll go look for a Melling.
