I purchased a 1966 427/425 some time ago from a 78 year old gentleman who had the engine rebuilt several years ago. When he rebuilt the engine he had them replace the solid lifters with hydraulic lifters. I would like to go back and put the right cam and lifters in. Any suggestion on where to get the correct parts and if you can do it without pulling the engine would be appreciated. Jerry Nutt

Re: boat54@aol.com
you might check in some of the mail order catalogs. like Summit Jeggs I think some of the cams have a repo cam for the old engines. check with Crane cams Lunati Edelbrock ect.. on an 66 you might get by with out pulling the radiator. I am sure on the sharks that you would need to pull the rad to get the room, because of the slant. but yes you can still get by with out yanking the engine. good luck.- Top

Jerry,
Lyndon is correct. The original 3863143 cam is available in reproduction from Crane Cams and sevaral other sources.
A word of caution on the cam. If the previous owner used a correct 65-66 non grooved rear cam bearing during his rebuild, you will have to use a cam with a grooved rear journal. Either the cam journal or the cam bearing must be grooved. If the bearing is the non grooved style and you install a non grooved cam, there will be no overhead oiling.
Fortunately, most bearing suppliers service only the grooved bearing today so most likely that's what's in the motor now, and if that's the case, you can then use either the grooved or the ungrooved cam.
If you remove the current cam and find that it has no groove, that has to mean the bearing is the later grooved style. If that's the case, the new cam can be used with or without the groove in the rear journal.
