Finish for upper control arm and shaft

What would be the finish for these two items? I suspect the arm is painted and the shaft unfinished/natural or are they both painted? I can easily have them ELPO coated(rust proofed). Thanks in advance.

C2 67 Judging guide states the "A arms, cross shafts, bushings, and retainers" are painted gloss black.

Other posts here have stated that these parts were assembled and then dipped in paint...thus all painted

The Ball joints are natural. The attaching studs will be blackened and the nuts and shims will be cad plated.

      The Shock washer is natural.

BTW.... All of this is in the judging manual available from NCRS.

        Typo

I'm sure Mikey meant to say C2 control arm shafts and washers were coated black. Must have been an early morning typo.

Yep! Steve is right for C2. I just finished this part of my body off this week.

I think it depends which year you're discussing whether or not the control arm shaft was painted, as well as how aggressive the blackout guy was that day if you have a C2 that had the entire chassis blacked out.

I know that in early C3s, it can go either way. My 72 has them blacked out, the 71 does not.

Where in my 1963-64 Corvette Technical Information Manual & Judging Guide(Third Edition) are these finishes spelled out or am I lacking another manual/guide?

                Jack,

The coating info for control arm shafts would be included in the 63-64 JG, I believe, but I'm told that it's incorrect. Supposedly, it is stated that the finish on the shafts, washers and bolts is supposed to be natural but that's not correct. Hopefully, the new edition that is due out in a week or two will have this corrected and state that these items were coated black.

                  Patrick,

Yes, there's a big difference between C2 and C3 on control arm attaching hardware. For C2, the front control arms arrived on the assy line with the shaft, bushing, washer and bolt painted black. The final chassis blackout had little to do with these items.

I know very little about C3 but I do remember that at some point early in the series, the shaft and hardware was added to the control arm AFTER the arm was painted. My original guess was that this occured some time around 1969 or 1970 but I don't remember for sure.

By the time the C3 cars were going through, the final blackout was down to a minimum and most of the front susp items were not recoated at all. By roughly 1970, the mufflers were just about the only thing that was a target.
