I was looking at the bottom end of a 1967 block and I noticed what appears to be an "R" stamped in-between the oil filter area and the rear main. Directly across on the other side in the surface area is stamped what looks to be a date code "T037". Can anyone tell me what all this represents. If the letter is an "R" [it is not real distinct] does this mean "replacement" and is the other stamping a date code then? Was all of this done at the factory or at the dealership? Any insight would great be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: 1967 block stamping date and letter
I have seen lots of things stamped on blocks, most of which seem to mean nothing to the engine or car based on what we know.
I imagine they are machinist stamps to indicate what was done at given points or as set up for the next stage.
Are you talking the pan rail or the back side of the rear flange? If you have the pan off, you will find more stamps most likely.
And if the engine has ever been rebuilt, whoever worked on it could have stamped things because many private shops like to stamp engines to mark their work, partly to let them know if someone brings it back wanting it fixed.- Top

Re: 1967 block stamping date and letter
Mike, thanks for the response. The area by oil filter that has the "R" is covered by the pan rail. The area that contains the date code is covered mostly by the flange for the starter motor. I had been told that if you see date codes stamped on bottom end of engine it indicated that it was either an over the couter block or a dealer replacement block. Have you ever heard that scenario?- Top
