Ed, Thanks now I know I'm not crazy, My friend had a 62 in the late 60's and he said he had the same problem with the gasoline smell.. I've found out that my problem is at the cap itself. Jim posted a response stating that he tried a non vented cap with no problems ... I'll try it when I get a chance...thanks for the feedback,,,Charlie

As long as your tank has a vent hose i see no reason for the vented cap.
If the tank does not have a vent hose the engine will starve for fuel and the tank is apt to collapse some without the vented cap.

The fill area has a drain at the bottom. There should be a hose attached to that drain that runs to the bottom of the frame. If that hose is missing you'll get the fuel smell on R/H turns too. Rob

          Re: C1 gasoline odor

It's the filler tube to gas cap seal, the gas cap has lost it spring tension or the gas cap seal is worn , if you put a rubber material over the gas filler neck end using a large hose clamp to seal the gas off and the gas smell goes away while driving , it's the cap. You can try to bend the gas cap TANGS to get a tighter fit or slow down on right hand turns or don't fill the tank all the way up or sell it and get a C2 or!!!!! He!He!

              Hi Ed

I read somewhere and was told that ALL 62 corvettes had the non-vented caps.

Paul if it is vented there should be a small hole in the center. If you are still having the fuel problem try a cheap vented cap. Rob

                        Re: C1 gasoline odor

The ST-12 Service Guide (pg 8-4) indicates the cap is vented. I suppose these caps should let air in and keep gas in. Maybe the cap I got from CC is not up to the job. Time to try a non-vented cap...Ed

Rob, thanks; two good solutions, the rubber seal to rule out the cap and the purchase of a 63 to 67, need a good deal on one and that's not easy.. Charlie

                            C1 Gas Caps

Don't know whether gas caps on C1s should be vented or non-vented. I suspect non-vented, because the cap doesn't need to provide the vent to the tank. The tank itself is vented through that little hose on the top.

If you buy a replacement C1 gas cap from the usual Corvette vendors, it'll cost about $10 and come in a NAPA box with their part number hidden under the Corvette vendor's sticker. That cap will say "vented" on it. But in examining the cap, it looks like it's one of those jobbies that lets air in, but won't let liquid out. It's got a small hole on the outside of the cap in the center. On the backside of the cap that is under the hole, is a chamber with what looks like some stuff in it.

If gas is sloshing out of the tank into the fill compartment, I'd suspect the cap to fill tube seal. Is the cap loose on the tube? Dr. Rebuild used to sell gas cap gaskets.

                              Re: C1 gasoline odor

All C-1 gas caps beginning from the introduction of the vented tank in mid-'57 are NON-VENTED; there was even a Service Letter showing the dealers how to add the tank vent system to early 57's that were built without it (and to swap the vented cap for a non-vented cap when doing the conversion) to deal with "gas smell" complaints. Using a VENTED cap on a C-1 is guaranteed to result in "gas smell", along with a missing fuel filler cavity drain nipple and hose (almost all of which are missing).

I put a non-vented cap on this morning. Now I can smell the roses, not the petrol. Thanks for all your help...Ed
