    67 Coupe Fuel Tank Replacement

Has anyone ever had a problem getting a Quanta reproduction fuel tank to fit properly in a 1967 (or any other midyear) coupe? I have checked to ensure proper alignment of the tank on the frame and cross support, and despite the fact that it is correct in this respect, the fuel filler neck when attached to the tank, is not aligning with the coupe body. The original tank, which fit perfectly, was cut up in order to save the tank sticker.

Are you using the original tank straps that were on your old tank? Can you describe the type of misalignment that you have? (filler neck too far forward, etc.)

This question has come up aLOT on this forum. There must be something different about a repro Quanta tank that needs to be addressed with them. If someone in the future is going to replace their tank they should CAREFULLY measure the old to the new and note same on this forum for future reference. It might save a lot of headaches

I just obtained a new gas tank from Quanta. I compared it to my original, and it is nearly identical in every respect. I took detailed measurements and found every dimension to be identical. The only differences I could find: First, the original filler neck bolts had an "L" headmark, and the new ones had no markings; second the OL A logo was embossed slightly deaper on the original; third the new one did not have any pin holes . Having said all that, I have not tried to install the new one yet, so I'll have to wait and see.

          Jim,

I have several posts regarding the filler neck on my Quanta tank not centering, (front to back), in the body opening, even using original straps. I believe there is a slight difference from the original tank. With the filler neck centered, the opening for the fuel tank sending unit appears too close to the rear frame rail. I struggled with it for hours, several times, got it within 1/4" of centered and finally gave up. Good luck...

I've run into that just putting an original tank back in. There is a lot of moving around especially when putting in from underneath the body. A lot easier with the body off the car. Check the brace under the tank, the pads on it, and the straps. It all works together to adjust the tank into the right spot. A slight error on one side can move it a lot on the other.

              Mike,

What guide do you use to position the tank with the body off that will ensure the filler neck will be cenetered in the body opening?

First, thanks to everyone for responding. The guides I am using to mount the tank are the bumps (for lack of better terminology) on the bottom of the tank that appear as though designed to keep the tank from sliding forward on the brace. I am also using the fuel sender unit as a reference - to slide the tank back further would place the sender unit so far back on the frame as to be underneath it. I am using the original tank straps.

The neck is too far forward in relation to the body (over an inch) and seems to be a little lower than it was on the old tank. The trouble is, I can't move the tank back any further. It almost seems like the height of the front of the tank is lower than it should be, resulting in too shallow an angle from front to rear. This gives the neck the wrong angle in relation to the body.

I've used a Quanta tank before on another restoration and the fit was perfect so it never occurred to me that I would run into a problem like this, otherwise I would have measured the new tank carefully in relation to the old one.

                  Jim,

I am experiencing exactly the same problem. My tank was purchased by the previous owner from Chicago Corvette, however, since it has the AOL logo, I assume it must have been made by Quanta. When I try to line mine up, (with the body on) I would need to put the rear edge of the opening for the sending unit right up to the front edge of the rear frame rail to center the filler neck. Very frustrating...

My experiences have been trial and error, more than any guide. Put it in, chekc for position, tighten, check, loosen, adjust, etc.

Maybe I have been lucky, but at the time, it didn't seem like it.

Re: 67 Coupe Fuel Tank Replacement

                      Hi Jim:

I had the same problem recently, and it was very time consuming to resolve. I think I had the tank in and out of the car about 10 times before I finally got it to fit right.

In my case, the Quanta tank had been installed by the previous owner, and the filler neck was about 3/4 inch forward of center. However, the edge of the sender opening was almost in contact with the rear frame rail, so rearward movement of the tank would put the sender opening on top of the frame rail.

It turned out that the rear frame rail (which is not very sturdy) had been pushed slightly in and up during a minor rear end collision. The rear bumpers are bolted to this rail, so that almost any impact on the bumpers can bend the rail.

With the tank out of the car, you can check for an inward bow on the rear rail by measuring the distance from the rear rail to the next inner rail at both the edges and the center. You can check for an upward bow in the rear rail using a straight edge. I was able to fix both bends with some home made fixtures.

After that, the tank would sit nicely centered if I set it in place with no straps installed (this is a very useful check, I found). However, with the straps loosely installed, the tank would not slide sufficiently rearward.

I concluded that the straps had taken a "set" from the previous installation when they were tightened down with the tank too far forward. In the end, I had to manually reshape the straps to allow sufficient rearward movement.

One really useful tip that I got from Rob Axel was to use some wood blocks and wedges to force the tank rearward while the straps were still loose. With the tank held in position by the wood blocking, I then tightened the straps.

I realize that my situation differs from yours in that your previous tank fit fine. However, the steps that I went through might be useful ones for you to try.
