    Re: St.Louis Plant

Joe, several days ago you were, and I am sure still are trying to decide whether to restore the '57 Sebring/Daytona because you feel that it is unrestored now. As I see it, it has been cometically restored to the point that it doesn't represent to the viewer what it truly is unless you look at it closely and begin to see the differences from normal production.

I have a crazy idea. When I first had a chance to evaluate this car (and didn't know what it was) I noticed that the metal flake paint was very brittle on the rear valance portion. With this in mind, my '56 is in for new paint and when I took it into the shop the shop owner who has painted corvettes for 35 years told me that he was going to strip the paint with a razor blade. I went back a week later and I couldn't believe it. The car was completely stripped right down to the primer without any gouge marks. There were just curly strips of old paint laying all over the floor a smooth surface where the paint had been and no sanding had been done. So here is the idea....why not have either the left or right half stripped down to the white lacquer revealing the blue stripes and coves? The paint that is on it now seems to be very brittle and may just come off easy.

I also noticed that you had taken the aftermarket radio and the "art deco" face plate off and replaced it with a radio delete plate.

I could see this car half and half for a while until you decide what to do with it. Could be interesting.

      Garry

Thanks for the tip. Can you put me in touch with the guy who actually did the razor blade paint removal?

I removed the art deco period radio but have it stored...along with the other unique items that came with the car.

Sorry we did not have more time to talk at Bloomington. The response to the car was overwhelming.

Actually it has been non stop for the last 12 months.

I was shown an original 57 Chevrolet press kit at Bloomington. In it was a slide film that features this car when driven by Paul Goldsmith along with other pictures showing the Blackwidow 57 Chevy's...and also includes a copy of the 1957 Daytona Speed Weeks results.

I am now looking to purchase one of these original press kits...if anyone can help.

      Kindest regards...Joe Trybulec
