    C2:67 Holley 3810- Zoom Again

Well, last week I put the restored 3810 (751) on the car, and after a run, I had this terrible flooding problem coming from the secondaries.

This week I took it off again and dissassembled the secondary fuel bowl. There was a little bit of light sediment in the bowl but I don't think enough to jamb the float. Tested the float for leaks,(it was OK), and then took Rob Axel's advice and bent the float back to the back of the bowl and adjusted it to spec (5/16"). You know that there is less then an 1/8" clearance between the float and the secondary plate, and I figured that the float was probably bent a little towards the plate and was probably hanging up.

While I had the carb off, I took John Hinckley's advice and plugged the holes in the heat slot. What a simple thing to do. Bought two 7/16" cup plugs at the local auto parts store (50 cents each) and tapped them in with a 7/16" bolt. Here's the picture and below:

Tapping them in with the bolt took all of 2 minutes.

Well, I got the carb back on, adjusted it up and took the same 10 mile run as last week. I almost got whiplash in first, second and third like she used to do. And no flooding, she idles smoothly although a little lopey at about 650.

Here's the carb on the car:

I know the rest of the engine looks like ----, but that's another project.

    Thanks again, Rob and John

And thanks also to Clem, for your endless knowledge of carburetors.

Don't forget to wire open your heat riser. Looks great by the way.

        Gerard,

I searched the archives for John's note on plugging the heat slot holes, but didn't find anything. I'd like to see if his tip pertains to list #6239 carbs also. Can you refer me to his original post? My car runs rich, and I wonder if I can cure it of that condition, or at least improve it, with that modification.

        Thanks,
        Larry, #10731

          Larry,

Here's the thread with John's post on plugging the holes in the heat slot:

It has more to do with the intake manifold then the carb. The heat slot was put on 67 327/300HP CI manifolds (and there may be others) to heat up the carb fast in cold weather conditions, but I guess it also serves to cook your carb.

One of those great GM ideas like the non-externally adjustable fuel bowl floats (which only lasted one year and became the curse).

            The "hot-slot" carb pad design was used on '66-'68 327/300, '68 327/350, and '66-'69 427/390 engines.
