61 gear box oil or grease?

Does anybody know what to use in the manual box on a 61? The book says to use gear lubricant, but I own a parts store and can't find it. Years ago they used chassis grease, but I think it is too thick.

Thanks for the help, I am going to ned it, this is my first Vette and it needs some work. Joe

    Joe,

I assume you mean your steering box, and not your transmission. As far as I know you should be using grease in your steering box, readily available from GM. Joe Lucia has posted the correct P/N for this several times, so it can be found in the archives.

I have always used some 80w gear lube with no problems. I have had a large container for years (don't use much) so I can't tell you where to get it. Don H.

I have heard where some have used Constant Velocity Joint grease(front wheel drive)with great satisfaction.
