    Tach cable

Finally getting to the smaller issues on my 1966 Coupe Small Block. I need to replace the tach cable. Which restoration house has the most authentic? What is the orginal length? Will the universal speedometer kits that auto parts houses sell work? I just need the inner drive wire. Any input is welcomed. Thanks

    Re: Tach cable

    Clark,
Check with your local NAPA parts store. A few years ago, mine broke on my 1970 Corvette and I was able to replace the inner cable using the kit I purchased at NAPA. Do you have the the pieces from your original cable? That is the best way to determine the length. Otherwise, you need to find out how much needs to stick out of each end to make a solid connection at the tach and distributor ends.

Try Speedometer servive company, they made one for me. I can't remember the length. I have it written down and will post later if no body post it.

The cable I ordered is 24 inches which I believe was put in the original cable housing. Mike

Bought the kit from autozone 6 bucks. I'll find out how good it works this weekend when the rebuild is finished

            Re: Tach cable

Besure the cable you use is not too long and puts pressure on the tachometer head. Measure the "extension" from the cable flange end and be sure the replacement cable doesn't exceed it. If the cable "bottoms out" in the tach head fitting you could have premature tach failure.

Read this in an old archive.

            Ditto for speedometer too.

Went up to NAPA and bought the kit, made the cable and thought I was on my way. However, I found the shirt on the piece you crimp on was longer than the orginal and would not go all the way into the tach and therfor, could not get the nut on. Your thoughts?
