You have classic worn out handle syndrome. Change it and be done with it, but do not use the cheap import handles. Their short life span is not worth the cost saving.

Jack, if your handles are presentable, you can take the spring from a donor handle and use it in yours. This is a very simple job once the handle is off of the door. The shaft that the finger piece rotates on can be pushed out, the new spring installed and the shaft re-seated.

        Very easy DIY job.

Mike I bought new door handles from GM for my 68 back in 85 and installed. First problem was the handle flap would come up to far. Fixed that by restricting the up movement with fitting the piece of round metal protector that came from a eraser end of a retractable lead writing instrument. The handles have never been used daily and the chrome finish is showing to much wear for the limited use. The handles on my 70 are original and are in better appearance condition and work just like they did when new. Hope what is available today is a better product than what I got grom GM for my 68. The chroming on my original 70's handles was an outstanding application to hold up to wear they have encountered. A good used part might be the better purchase if you can find them.
