    Fuel door resto....midyear

Details...details...details...Anybody ever attempt to resto their original fuel door by using parts from a repro part?

As we know the repro has differences in the silver ring and the back plate details. My original's clear plastic is badly cracked.

    Thanks

I recently replaced the emblem on my original fuel door ring by carefully lifiting the edges of the "spin pressesd" posts with an exacto blade and a pair of micro side cutters. After installing the emblem I used a spring loaded centre punch to re-seat the post tops. I wanted to avoid the use of the screws that the replacement emblem came with...

      Question re: Fuel door resto

      Kyle,

Are the spin pressed posts the things that I thought were rivets on the back side? How did you restoration look when it was done, specifically in terms of the rivet things?

Re: Question re: Fuel door resto

        Gary:

Yes, they are. Actually an integral part of the upper casting. This same situation exists when a rebuild of the midyear glove box door is performed. They are NOT rivets, and don't treat them as such, otherwise you will ruin your original part.

Gary, as Joe indicated the "spin rivets" are actually part of the casting. they are just posts with hollow tips that are then pressed to hold the emblem in place.

I jsut used several objects to carefully un-press the tops of these posts just enough to get the backing plate off. after I installed the emblem I used a spring loaded centre punch to re-press the tops of the post. I am very happy with the results. The archives also suggested the use of a small amount of JB weld and same creative "forming" to simulate a post head if you happen to break off one of the post tops (this was not an issue with my resto) good luck.
